Store Chore

Hello friends. I hope life is good out in internet land.  I have been busy taking care of my “other sites.”  That’s right, I have been cheating on The Smithocracy.  Never fear dear reader, The Smithocracy is safe.  However you may or may not be aware that when I am quiet over here, I am being loud elsewhere. has gotten a makeover lately.  I’ve reorganized the portfolio and updated (read completely changed) the store. But the biggest news, is that I added a blog!  Now there is a place for me to talk about what is coming out of the art studio these days.  I would love it if you would check it out and send any feed back my way.  I am hoping to get a little more personal in the process of each piece and give people a behind the scenes kind of look on some of the art I create. Whether it be a simple sketch or a major piece.

Also you can now follow me on instagram, not just as The Smithocracy, but as @createdby_tanniesmith.  This is my artagram, I guess you would say.  An easy way to see what I am currently up to day to day.

But the title of this post is Store Chore. That is because setting up the store has been a HUGE chore!  Also it rhymes in a clever and convenient way.

Up till now I have been selling prints of my work directly from…well…me.  However that has been somewhat of a pain.  To keep track of orders, make sure things are packaged rightl and sent to the right place. To print and print and print, till the right color, layout etc. finally come out…I’m over it. I have officially turned all that over to a few online art sites.

The main site is Fine Art America. They will be my main supplier and are handling the store that is actually built into my personal website.  They offer way better prints than I can, as well as canvas and acrylic prints. They even sell my work at the original sizes I created it for.  So if you have been one of the many trying to steal my World Map piece, well stop it. You can have one of your own now.  Nearly full size too. Or teeny tiny, if you’d rather.

The World by Tannie Smith

Or if you wanted the “Establish a House” poster as giant as I have it, you can do that too!

Establish a House | Tannie Smith

Establish a House | Tannie SmithThey even sell it in the full size on stretched canvas.  oooooo ahhhhhhh.  That’s nicer than I have it!  Imma gonna have to get that.

My point is that they give you choices, and I don’t have to do all the heavy lifting.  Just keep creating.

I’m also using some other sites for items such as pillows, mugs, t-shirts, stickers, you get the idea. Some of the stuff is super cute on other products.  Like I totally want this “A is for…” pillow for Austin’s room.

A is for... | Tannie Smith

I made that and didn’t even know it could be so Awesome.  A is also for awesome ;-)

And I can’t even decide which “Robot” item to get for Logan.

So can you see why I decided to outsource?  They can do a way better job than I.

So please check it all out. (links below)  Let me know what you think.  If you see something that you like comment below!  Perhaps if there is one popular item, I can do a giveaway…just saying…

Also if you could tell me about what your user experience was like on each store. I am sort of testing a couple of these out, not sure if I will stick with them.  Fine Art America is here to stay.  I love what they have to offer.  The others, I am still not so sure of.

Feedback makes me feel like the Store is less Chore and more…um…Adore? What rhymes with chore that means fun? *shrugs*

P.S.  Wow you guys have been keeping my stats bar busy lately.  Thanks so much!! Do me a solid and show me who you are by liking the Created By site on Facebook. Or keep showing The Smithocracy the love.  Either way, we feel special.

Blah Blah Blogging.

Sooooooooooooo. How have you been?

What does one say when one has been silent for so long.

Sorry. *sheepish grin*

Obviously it’s been a while. I have not been keeping up on my weekly post goal at all.  I had to figure out why it was so hard for me to keep such a simple goal and I finally found the answer.  I DON’T like writing How To’s, or DIY Tutorials or Step By Steps.  I did not know this about myself, until I suddenly realized that the reason I was procrastinating was because I didn’t want to write about The Thing I Just Did.  I am more of a Show and Tell kind of gal.  I just want to show The Thing The Smithocracy Did.  Not give a blow by blow account.  The real process was painful enough and to relive it in words is torture.

So time to change things up!  From now on I will still share my projects and general happs in The Smithocracy world.  If a project needs some clarification I will just refer you to the blogs and tutorials I used. Because yeah, that is basically what I do…google everything.

If it came from my brain, I’ll let you know and maybe, just maybe, then I will possibly give some instruction, but that is not a promise.

Enough about that. I am excited to do a Show and Tell today!

This past weekend I did something I have wanted to do for a loooong time.  In Texas there is this huge Antiques/Collectibles/Junk/Unique Objects fair in Round Top. So everyone just refers to it as Round Top.  Friday was finally my chance to check it out with some fun friends.  We had a blast looking throughout the miles and miles and miles (come on, it IS Texas) of tents.  Each one as unique and fun to explore as the last.

I scored some awesome finds and haggled the perfect price for each one. My favorite part about these things is the haggling! So here they are, my new favorite objects.

First up. Elk Antler, I have wanted you for a while but your price has made you a Hard To Get fellow. After a long search I have found you at last. The right guy at the right price.

Elk Antler | The Smithocracy Dining Room | The SmithocracyNext up is Coral. Coral I didn’t even know I needed you. But once I laid eyes on your perfect shape and sharp personality, I couldn’t say no. You complete the mantle Coral and you complete me.  What would we do without you.

Coral | The SmithocracyLast but not least is Driftwood with his sidekick Air Plant.  I knew I was searching for Something.  Something with texture, something that would stand out. Something to live on the Sofa Table.  Once I met you, I knew the search was over.  The perfect Duo, you two make my heart happy.

Drift Wood | The Smithocracy Living Room | The Smithocracy

That is the end of this weeks Show and Tell.  Mr. Dan the Man is currently installing the next one. He promised it would be done by Thursday, so perhaps you will witness the rare Two Posts in One Week event. ;-)

See you later! And if you have any fun finds you’d like to share, go ahead in the comments section! I don’t just like to Show and Tell, I also like to See and Listen!

P.S. Are you sad I was silent for so long? Did you know that even if the blog is quiet, the Facebook page is boppin’.  So feel free to follow for any extras!  You can also find me on Instagram and Pinterest.

…and we’re back!

Soooooo I’m not sure what to say after such a long and awkward silence. There is some coughing and clearing of the throat. Some eye shifting, wondering who should go next. That nervous laugh…

…lets just dive right in shall we?

LAST TIME ON THE SMITHOCRACY (radio show announcer voice)

I left you with the knowledge that we completed the Art Studio. How fun! I promised to share all the wonderful projects that came out of that. And share I shall! Let’s first start with the floor.

Ahhhhhhhh the beautiful, beautiful floor.

Art Studio |The SmithocracyI LOVE this floor. I L-O-V-E this FLOOR!  I even LURVE it. I wish you could reach in and touch it. Anyone that comes to the Smithocracy in Real Life, I make touch the floor. It is so silky soft. Seriously get down and rub your face on it. Ahhhhhh Smoooooooth.

So how did this floor get here. Well it came from the big Orange Box.

boxes_floorIt is Tiger Striped Engineered Bamboo. We chose to get the click and lock for easy install. Once it was home, we had to let it get climatized for a few days. So we introduced it to it’s future home and left it to itself. Once Mr. Tiger was acquainted, it was time to do something about the carpet.

pullingbackcarpetThis was really easy. Just pull it back and roll, roll, roll. Easy enough that we recruited the best helpers.

goodhelpersA little tougher was removing the rug. But not as tough as we expected.

removingcarpetpadAnd when I say we, I mean Dan. I actually did not do a single thing on this project. I was the supervisor. Which means I took pictures and said “good job,” “looks great,” “your amazing.” All those supportive things that helps ensure future project help.

Here the pad is removed and Dan celebrates with an awkward pose.

carpetgoneawkwardstanceWe (again, by we I mean Dan) did have to do a little scraping to remove the old carpet pad remnants. However, I don’t know if it is because of the newness of the house, or if the installation was poor, but the pad came off a lot easier than we supposed. Huzzah!

Next it was time for the new pad. This is a layer that you put between the wood floors and the cement. It helps with squeaks and protects it from moisture from coming up. So don’t skip this step. There are a lot of options, so pick the one you think works best for your situation.

helperOnce that was done it was time to start installing.

This is where I learned a new kind of math. I have been suspicious of this math for a while, but this project confirmed it.

New Project = New Tool

The right toolUsing this math, Dan drove to Orange Box and got himself the perfect table saw. This actually is necessary for all the cutting that needs to be done. But you, dear reader can borrow one, or rent one for a much better price. Unless you too are married to a Dan. A Dan will insist it must live permanently at your house or else he will pout for a very long time. And no one wants that.

For the most part, the install went rather quickly. If I remember right, it was about 2 days. There are so many sites that explain how to do it, that it seems silly to repeat it. So just know it involves cutting, fitting, snapping, snapping, snapping, snapping, snapping, cutting, fitting, snapping, snapping…you get the picture.

And here is a picture to get!

almostdone Soon it was complete!

While I was gone one day, Dan installed the quarter-rounds and finished up the trim. So sorry, no pictures of that part of the process.

finalPhew! I never worked so hard in my life! ;-)

Here is a close-up for Mr. DeMille.

floorcloseupIt’s so pretty!! I can’t even get it in picture form correctly!  Just lay on it and love it, and pet it and tell it it’s pretty.

So there you have it, the story of the floor. I am not sure if you picked up one that fact that we are fans. Do you have a project you love so much you want to name it?

P.S. If you follow me on facebook than you know exactly why it has been so quiet. Just one of the benefits of being a fully fledged Smithocrat. :-)

Hey Tannie, where you been?

I be in my studio, studio!

That’s right, one of my life long dreams have finally been realized. Thanks to the hard work of my super duper handy Dan.

I finally have an art studio to call my own!

We have been working hard converting the front office into a full on art studio. JOY!! And now that it is FINALLY complete, I can share it with all of you!

Here is where we started.

before | The Smithocracy before | The SmithocracyAs you can see, it was kind of a hodge podge, not sure what to do with this space, type of a room. At one point it even became a gym. But I never took pictures of that. Just imagine empty room, with a TV and exercise equipment. Yawn.

Shall we see what it looks like today? Literally today, I just took these pictures.

Here is a not so awesome panorama. However, it gives a good idea of the space.

Art Studio |The SmithocracyLets look at the details, shall we?

Art Studio |The Smithocracy Art Studio |The Smithocracy   Art Studio |The Smithocracy Art Studio |The Smithocracy  Art Studio |The Smithocracy Art Studio |The Smithocracy

Art Studio |The SmithocracyI am beyond happy! It is so nice to have a space to work in. It keeps me from spreading my mess to every part of the house. It’s also nice having all my supplies out of boxes.

Logan was the first to give it a test drive.

Logan |The SmithocracyAs you can imagine A LOT of projects occurred to get to the final product. So my next few posts will be all about the things we did. Installing floors, building shelves, making curtains, etc. So much to share! So stay tuned.

Anyone out there have there own space to create in? Please share!

4 to Tabouret

This won’t come as a shock to my sleuth-like readers. You may have possibly put 1 and 1 together if you saw these pictures on Instagram.

Round Mirrors      Red Tabouret | The SmithocracyYes, I did indeed find some stools for my kitchen island.

Craig’s List once more pulled through for me on this one. A local cafe was closing its doors in order to open new ones. In the process they were selling their old Tabouret Stools. At $25 a pop, I snatched them up before anyone could say “hey, are those Tabour….oh, they’re sold.”

Because they were outdoor stools, they did in fact have some sun damage. I took them over to the Official Smithocracy Cleaning Station.

AKA, Kitchen Sink.

Red Tabouret Stools | The SmithocracyPulled out the ‘ol Magic Eraser pads and Viola!

_MG_0569The one on the left has been Magically Erased, while the one on the right patiently awaits its turn. It took one Magic Eraser per stool. Yikes, quite the work out for my poor little arms. I decided for my own sanity to clean one stool per day. This payed off well, as I think doing them all at once would have turned into me hating them forever and just lighting them on fire. My patience payed off and I now have 4 fancy Tabouret Stools living at my counter.

_MG_6926Boring and colorless.

Red Tabouret Stools | The Smithocracy

Red Tabouret Stools | The SmithocracyRed Tabouret Stools | The SmithocracyJust the pop I was looking for.

I’m really happy about my find, and especially how well they cleaned up with just a Magic Eraser. I was really NOT looking forward to painting them.

They also receive 4 Smithocratic Votes of Awesomeness for the amazing convenience of eating at the counter. We never knew how incomplete our lives were before these fancy new stools. I don’t know how we managed before. ;-)

Any fun finds find their way into your life lately?

P.S. I like you, you should like me! Hop on over to facebook and make it official. :-)

Guest Room Update

Some of you that follow me on instagram may have seen this little sneak peek.

Round MirrorsYep, two delicious round mirrors. (reflecting another sneak peek, you little spies you)

You may have wondered what I was ever going to do with those two mirrors. Well I will tell you about one of them.

Today is the story of the Large Gold Round Mirror.

I have been redecorating the guest room. Now that it is no longer Vanessa’s Room *sniff* it was time to revert to guest status.  First let us open the vault and see where we were starting from. You may remember this photo from our very first house tour.

humble beginnings | The SmithocracyYikes! Plain Jane Galore. This is what I call Hodge Podge Whatever Is Left Styling. Well once Vanessa moved in, it turned into Teenager/Young Adult Chaos Styling. After she left it was time to give it an actual style. If you haven’t gathered by now I lean towards Mid-Century Modern. Emphasis more on Mid-Century then Modern. So it was time to make this room match the rest of the house.

First thing was a bedding switch.

IMG_0011The sheets are grey not purple. I can’t seem to make them do anything but purple in Digital Land. Anyway, excuse the graininess of the photo, it was taken late at night as a last minute thought.

The bedding was fine, but the whole rest of the room needed some more furniture. So I pulled some extra pieces from around the house, but it still needed something. So My Brain told me that a gold round mirror would be perfect. I thought My Brain had a pretty good idea. So I hopped on Craig’s List and Lo and Behold, someone was selling a large round gold mirror right down the street from me!

Fate had spoken.Guest Room | The SmithocracyTurns out the the Fateful Gold Round Mirror was the perfect touch.

Thanks to the wonder of iPhone, here is a panoramic.

IMG_0034Perfect for now. There is some more to do, but I am pleased with the progress thus far. Interesting side notes: The Print on the left was done by Dan’s Grandma who passed away recently. She was a very respected artist and Dan has many wonderful memories of her taking him to paint in a canyon by her house. The lamp on the right was made by Dan the Man himself. It was a Christmas present to yours truly. What a crafty guy. :-)

So there you go. The Guest Room is now open for business.

Hint, hint to far away friends. :-)

How exciting, a giveaway!

I have been a Busy Beaver lately and now it is time to show you what I have been up to. I have recently re-branded my art studio.

What? You didn’t know I had an art studio?

Well fear not. I don’t.

Not in the physical sense…yet. Dan and I are in the process of building/designing it as I type. (future post for you to look forward too.) However, I am still an artist, so therefore my whole house is an art studio. ;-) Anyway, lets get back on track. Yes, I have an art studio, and I have a website, and I teach summer art classes to kids ages 8-18. It is a lot of fun. I had a cute little site, that I had thrown together last minute and it served it’s purpose. But it was not my style. So for the past few days/weeks I have been building a new website and gearing up for my next summer sessions of art classes. Check out the new site here.

Here is a screen shot for you lazier lookers.

I also created a new facebook page.

facebookpageSo in honor of my online Grand Opening (see I can grand open online, even if it’s not ready here at home) I am going to do a giveaway. And what am I giving away you ask?

You may remember this guy from this post.

SubwayPoster_smallYep, that is right. I am giving away a print of my “Establish a House” poster. It is a smaller print, not 8 feet tall, but still about as tall as a movie poster.

Wow, calm down reader. Simple. When my new facebook page reaches 50 likes I will do a drawing. So it’s as simple as going to and liking my page. If you don’t want to wait forever, then I suggest you suggest that others do the same. :-)

Once I hit the 50 likes mark, then I will do a traditional random number drawing and we will have our winner. FYI, you don’t have to just be interested in art classes to want to like that page. It will be where I showcase all my art projects. So if I forget to brag here (unlikely) then it will definitely be there. So if you like art, of any kind, then like me. :-)

This is also fun, because I also hit my 100 posts mark. So two things to celebrate about. Whoo!

P.S. You can still like The Smithocracy too. No one will get jealous.

Worst Best Idea Ever

Well I have to apologize. I let a week go by without a single post. Something I had included in my New Years Goals. However, that is why it was a goal. Something to work towards, with the hope of achieving. That means I am not a failure for not doing it perfect the first time. I will pick myself back up and continue to strive towards that goal.

I think after this post you will see why I missed the last week.

Dan and I, for the most part, are fairly in shape people. We strive to maintain our weight, eat healthy and get plenty of exercise, we don’t smoke, drink or partake of any harmful substances. Our Doctors generally tend to be satisfied with what we do and believe us to be fairly close to the ideal patient. That being said, we still find ourselves slipping down the weight gain ladder. Especially as we keep doing that annoying thing called aging each year. Once again we found ourselves in that “time to clean up, shape up and get back on track” mode. We took a good look at where we are at, and where we are at is not satisfactory.

One of us was more unsatisfied than the other. One of us needed a little more “tuning up” than the other. One of us is named Dan.

Dan decided it was time to do something major. To really get a hold of himself and be who he wants to be Today. Not Tomorrow, not Next Year or Someday. But Now. So he asked if I would do P90X with him. Dan has supported me in a lot of my fitness goals, so it was time to give back. I agreed and we ordered the program. While we were waiting for it to arrive I started to think about how I was soon going to be back to eating clean. How it was time to clean out the fridge/pantry, say no to Ice Cream and yes to Carrots.

Small problem.

For the first time in a while, I didn’t want to say no to Ice Cream. I wanted to say YES!  Chocolate and Cookies and Crackers, OH MY!

Oh Cookie Monster. You know how I feel.

It was no longer going to be time for cookie. :-(

I started to feel grumpy about it. Then a little resentful. Then A LOT of Grumpy and Resentful. I was Grumpsentful.

So I said to myself, “Self, you are backwards. Somewhere you got confused and want junk, not goodness and health. Time to take control.”

And that is when I had the Worst Best Idea Ever.

I recently saw this little pin on Pinterest. It links to What The Sparkle.

InstructionsI like what she said about it, I thought to myself, “people like Dr. Oz, I like people, so this must be good.” I floated over to the Dr. Oz site to find out more. This is where I read things like, “This was great!” “Worked for me!” “I was never hungry” “I lost 500 pounds in three days!” Ok, I exaggerate, but you get my point. I thought, “this is what I need to get back on track.” So I emailed the link to Dan and he said he was in.

So first day of P90X was also the first day of the Dr. Oz Three Day Cleanse. Here is the rundown for the cleanse.

Photo on 3-4-13 at 9.04 AM #3 1st day – This is not so bad. People are wimps if they call this hard. What are they complaining about. I Feel great. Lunch and dinner are not that good, but you can power through it, no prob.

Day 2First Half of 2nd Day – Wow, everyone is super annoying. I have a headache, I miss food. This is hard, but manageable. I can do this. Remember chewing? That was nice.

Second Half of 2nd Day – Can Everyone Please Stop Making That Annoying Sound Called Talking! This Smoothie Is Disgusting But I Can Power Through. Where Is Food!!!! I Want Pizza!!! Who’s Stupid Idea Was This!

Do you see why I was NOT in the mood to write anything last week?

So yeah, not so easy.  Dan and I did it, but have since made a Pinky Swear to NEVER do it again. We did lose weight, (Dan 4, me 7) but it was only water weight. It came right back on in two days. One positive thing did come from it though. This is the part that makes it the Best Idea. I was so happy to start eating food again, that I didn’t care that it was such a clean diet. Bring it on carrots! Say yes to celery! Apple, you are the best. As long as I can crunch you, I love you! I no longer hunt for any chocolate crumbs in the house. I don’t need it. I am just so happy to eat any food that I don’t even want the junk.

So do I recommend this?

NO WAY! It was awful and horrible and the worst and longest three days of my life. However if you really want to kick your Naughty Cravings to the curb. This WILL do it. It really did get me back on track to eating healthy again and I am not Grumpsentful anymore. So The Smithocracy stance, Do It At Your Own Risk. Also hide all weaponry first.

How is P90X you ask?

I really like it! Great workouts so far and we feel good doing them. 100% Smithocracy approval. Although I did receive this text from Dan while I was typing this.

Ouch. I feel like somebody is pogo sticking my body, but the pogo stick is made of knives with acid on the blades. Feel the Burn. Luv the Burn. Be the Burn.

So yeah. It hurts. But it is a good hurt that puts everything back where it goes.

Have you done any crazy things in the name of fitness and health? Please share so we know we are not the only crazy’s in crazy town!

A Little More Privacy Please

Hello Wednesday, how are you?

I am sure you guys were wondering if I was about to miss my once a week post goal. Well fear not, I am not! Just took me a little longer to get the ball rolling. Busy busy busy. However I am so excited to share my latest little project!

For those who follow me elsewhere (see this post) you will have seen this little Sneak Peek.

instagram sneak peekThose that are of the more Quick of Mind and Wit quickly gathered that I had some blinds waiting around to be useful.

I soon followed up with this tease.

IMG_20130212_170012So where are these wonderful Privacy Providers?

If you said Kitchen, come on down!!!

Kitchen | The SmithocracyIt is really nice knowing I may now cook, eat, kiss my hubby whilst not being observed. Yes, that is right, I just used whilst in a sentence.

Let us go on a journey back through time shall we?

(insert Wayne’s World Flashback Sequence here)

Here is my sad kitchen when we first moved in.

beforeSo empty and sad.

Then I made a plan. A Photoshop Plan.

photoshop plan | The SmithocracyAnd then reality happened. (table project here)

_MG_6816Time to add some chairs.

_MG_6926And that brings us to today. Privacy Galore!

Here they are up.

upNow down.

blinds down | The SmithocracyIt really helps complete the room and make it seem as if people actually live here. Also I don’t have to feel creeped out if I walk through the kitchen at night anymore. I always feel like someone is watching…dun, dun, DUN!!!

If you are wondering, they are Bamboo Roller Shades. I would tell you where I ordered them, but I got the last ones and they aren’t selling them anymore. I decided that it was obviously fated for me to have these blinds. Seeing as they were the last three, I needed three, and they fit my windows EXACTLY. So from now on, we will refer to the Privacy Blinds as the Blinds of Destiny. (if you read that in a booming echo-y voice, then you are spot on.)

What do you think of my Blinds of Destiny? For some reason they make me feel more mature and grown up. Why do you think that is?

Have a great day and I wish you luck in finding your own privacy providing Blinds of Destiny.

Resistance is Futile

tumblr_mcq2isLYnY1qa08z8o1_1280picture source

Yes, it is true. I have been assimilated.

For years I have resisted, but I couldn’t any longer. Yesterday I caved and I am officially on “The Twitter.” As well as Instagram.

I have avoided those two things like the plague. Not for any moral reason, just that I already have enough Time Wasting things in my life. So what changed you ask? Well during a recent conversation it was brought up that if I don’t get on there, someone else could take my Smithocracy name. I laughed it off at first. Then I thought about it. Then it nagged at me. Then I worried. Then I lay awake at night. Then I got anxious. Then I logged on and registered.

So yes, I am now officially Assimilated into the Social Networking realm. So if you couldn’t get enough of me on this blog and on Facebook, feel free to follow elsewhere.

  1. Twitter.
  2. Instagram

I also started a twitter feed of all the silly cuckoo things my hubby says. Yes, Dan is a source of many awkward phrases and it was time to tell the world. You can follow him on twitter at Stuff Dan Says.

I end this post with an awesome quote I read this morning.

“The thing about truth is that it exists beyond belief. It is true even if nobody believes it.”

— President Uchtdorf
